Explanation for carnivorous deer?

My friend was camping by himself right off the reservation in northern Arizona and woke up to a noise. It was a huge deer but the weird thing was that it was eating another deer. He and his dog were petrified. Deer don't eat other deer, do they? He thinks it may have been a Navajo skinwalker?
