Orthodontist treatment?

Do you have to go through the treatment with the same doctor that did the diagnosis? Or are you allowed to take your diagnosis to a different orthodontist? I need to know because I need braces and I went for a consultation session with a dentist I didn't know, and he really sucks so I want to use a different orthodontist but a consultation session is pretty expensive. Please only valid answers.
